(review) Mustan Kuun Lapset – ‘Suruaika EP’

Finnish cult band Mustan Kuun Lapset celebrates thirty years of existence and what better way to celebrate it than with new EP. This new opus contains three new songs and one rendition of old classic, one of the best known in their existence called ‘Morfiinisiivet ‘. This EP provides guest performances by for example, French professional cellist Axel Salmona, guitarist of the Norwegian metal band In the Woods... Kåre André Sletteberg, and Voice of Finland finalist and Before the Dawn vocalist Paavo Laapotti. Cello. piano and violin give richness and sweetness to dark music and darkness provided by this band. ‘Kirstunkantaja’ is a kind of instrumental intro, but ‘Muistoa kunnioittaen’ is a lesson in dark metal that only this band can do, mixture of perfect extreme black and death metal with melody and melancholy. Clean vocals interplay perfectly with growls and melodic heavy metal influenced hooks and passages, yet retaining enough darkness in the music. ‘On suruaika täytetty’ is for me the best song on this little opus, Paavo Laapotti delivering such great vocal performance as guest on this song, also violin and cello made goosebumps on my skin listening to this haunting melody and song as a whole. The new rendition of ‘Morfiinisiivet’ gave new vision and life to this anthem, thus finishing this celebratory EP. Great and best wishes!

(review) Wishing Well – ‘Sin And Shame’ (Inverse Records)

Wishing Well are hailing from Helsinki, Finland area and this is their new, fourth album released with help of Inverse Records. The album contains eleven songs of nice and varied classic heavy metal sometimes bordering with power/true metal and sometimes hard/heavy rock. I love the use of Hammond keyboard which makes songs so rich and also a bit retro sounding, but original with sometimes main melody being keyboard themed. I love almost power metal written ‘In The Line Of Fire’ sounding fast, melodic and so powerful. But, as in all Finnish bands, there are lots of great and almost sad, melancholic melodies. Only Suomi bands can create such beautiful melodies like main guitar melody and chorus of more hard rock oriented ‘Soul Rider’. Vocals are very important in bands such as this one, and singer Pepe Tamminen sounds like a perfect mix between Ralf Scheepers and Michael Kiske/Kai Hansen having such powerful and voice that can sing just everything. Songwriting is perfect and whether a ballad like ‘Dancing Across The Stars’ or ‘Flying Finn’ – (is it about Finnish Formula One drivers?) which is more progressive metal oriented have that something making this album great. I can also hear lots of eighties metal and also seventies prog rock influences and that makes this album a little gem in the underground.

(news – new single/video) FINNISH BLACK DEATH METAL BAND ANIMA HERETICAE RELEASES NEW MUSIC VIDEO ‘CIMMERIAN DARKNESS’ !

Photographer: Teppo Ristola Photography

After the 2021 debut EP “Ov Behest” Finnish blackened death metal band Anima Hereticae has been working on their first full length album to be released in Autumn 2023. The band’s unique sound is a combination of Scandinavian melodic metal, death metal with black metal elements. The music goes in symbiosis with the visuals, both in live shows and on videos. Now released music video Cimmerian Darkness presents a view to the upcoming debut album’s beauty and epicness.

‘Even though pretty much anything we do has the sense of darkness and despair, this song has also a hint of hope in it. Creating new music is quite therapeutic and healing experience for us. And so was the writing of this song – a meditative and self-reflecting process. Some times as wondering this world we live in it feels like we are living in Cimmerian darkness on the edge of the world.’ Ville Rutanen and Taneli Jämsä background the song.

The music video is directed by the Anima Hereticae drummer Teppo Ristola and as an actor there is Jussi Matilainen from Where’s My Bible.
