Freedumb released Get Away – First single from upcoming album (2022)!

“Get Away” is the first taste of Freedumb’s upcoming album “Social Hangover”, which is being completed these days. Freedumb picks up the musical thread from the 2019 album “Post-Modern Dark Age”. In this round, the production team has been strengthened with Bjarte Lund Rolland (Kvelertak) who has worked with the arrangements and the selection process of the songs for the album.

Freedumb is based in Østfold, Norway and started in the winter of 2003 in Moss by Torstein Magnus Eriksen (Norsk Råkk, Friksjon), Ole Vanem (Knuste Ruter) and Thomas Walland Hansen (The Supervisors). In 2010, “The Freedumb Curse” came out on Tonehjulet Kräftpest, and Freedumb was selected for PYRO on NRK’s rating “Top 10 most promising bands in 2010”. The following year, guitarist Thomas Walland Hansen quits and Kim Trøbråten (Fork) joins. In 2016, the follow-up album “Feeding The Tapeworm” was released on Tonehjulet Kräftpest and Freedumb released their most comprehensive Norwegian tour. At the end of the tour, Ole Vanem throws in the drumsticks and in the winter of 2017, Petter Cindahl (Bits Between / Your Epitaph) became the new drummer in Freedumb. The band will start recording a new album in the summer of 2017 with producer Hans Tømmerholen (Bits Between). In August 2017, Big Day Records will release the single “Let it slide” which will receive rave reviews and sneak onto several official Spotify playlists. In October 2017, the shocking news came that Cindahl had passed away and the band was put on hold. In the spring of 2018, Arne-Magnus Fjelle (Blodstrupmoen) will be announced as the new drummer. The band starts fresh with brand new material that lays the foundation for the upcoming album “Social Hangover” (2022). During the winter of 2019, work will be completed on the recordings from 2017 and the album “Post-Modern Dark Age” will be released in September 2019 on Big Day Records. Freedumb promotes the album with concerts in Norway and Denmark in the autumn of 2019 and the band plays at Trondheim Calling 2020 in February before Covid19 darkens all concert stages in March 2020. In the spring and summer of 2021, Freedumb releases remastered recordings of “2 wrongs make 1 right”, a 7 “split release with Göttemia from 2008 and The Freedumb Curse – Reversed which is the first draft of the debut album which was planned for release in the autumn of 2008.

(review) Mayhem – Atavistic Black Disorder/Kommando e.p.

Mayhem

Norwegian black metal legends are back with new e.p. Mayhem released an e.p. containing 7 songs. First three songs, called Atavistic Black Disorder side of the e.p. are left overs from Daemon sessions and I may say that these songs are absolute Mayhem tour de force. From Voces Ab Alta which is a fantastic black metal hymn, across Black Glass Communion filled with Attila´s chanting and reminding me a lot of legendary De Mysteriis, to Everlasting Dying Flame which is for me my personal favorite of this opus. Kommando side of e.p. is band´s hommage to punk anthems which influenced the band and its members throughout the years. Covers of Discharge, Dead Kennedys, Rudimentary Peni and Ramones include guest performances by Messiah and Maniac, former singers of Mayhem and that all sounds great, but it is no match for original material side of this e.p. This e.p. serves as an addendum to Daemon album and shows how strong this black metal institution is right now. One of the best black metal bands ever.

(review) El Mapache – Stay At Home e.p.

El Mapache are melodic punk/pop punk band from Fredrikstad, Norway and this is their new e.p. containing five songs. When I think of Norway I usually first think of black metal, but Norway also has great hardcore and punk scene with Anti-Lam Front, Agenda and many others coming to mind right away. I am so happy that I listened to another awesome band from Norway. The music of El Mapache can be described as melodic punk rock, mid tempo and energetic with some pop punk influences in the song structures. Vocals are really nice, epic melodies and superb backing vocal harmonies. But, to me these guys sound a lot like Misfits. Not lyrically, but musically. Opening and closing guitar of the title song reminded me of Astro Zombies by Misfits. Also Tiny Blue reminded me a lot of newer Jerry Only fronted Misfits, especially in vocals department. To be clear, this is not a bad thing, this is good thing. I really don´t mean that El Mapache copied someone, quite the contrary, songs are strong and well written and I love this release, I am really looking forward to the full length in the future. My personal favorite that I listened to over and over again is Don´t Quit Your Dayjob with such nice lyrics and melody, that made me smile with joy. Passion is the song that picks just that, passion and punk rock energy, love, scene and fantastic songwriting. Madness closes the release in nice way, this song also reminds me of Misfits, but hey maybe that is only me and my weird brain. Anyway, great record, go listen and support!
