Ricochet is the first single off of melodic punkrock group Fine Gents’ debut album Present. The music and lyrics capture the feeling of a panic attack that comes out of nowhere, striking terror in the heart and fear in the mind for no discernible reason. The vibe pays tribute to skatepunk anthems from classic bands such as Pennywise, Good Riddance, and No Use For a Name. German horrorpunx The Crimson Ghosts are besides The Other most known and legendary European horror punk band. It’s been couple of years since the last one and I was eager to hear what will they do in new songs, judging by couple of singles they released prior to the record I knew I was in for a horror treat! The album offers eleven songs of trademark The Crimson Ghosts horror punk with lots of metallic influences and one of the best singer in the scene. Vlad’s vocals are sooo sweet and melodic, like doo wop singer in a horror punk band, every emotion, whether fear, whether loss, love, murder or bloody vengeance can be heard in his voice. From introspective ‘Of a Guilty Man’, one of my personal favorites, contemplative song about murder, to more metallic ‘On a Succubic Night’ Vlad’s vocal melodies rule sovereignly coupled with awesome guitar work, thundering bass and drum and one of the best backing vocal harmonies in the world. When all three voices join on choruses it makes my skin crawl with goosebumps. Argyle Goolsby of Blitzkid is a guest performer on another personal favorite of mine called ‘The Legend of Walking Sam’, I can only imagine how this hit sounds live. Anthemic choruses continue and songs like ‘From the Underground World’ hit me as a listener making me want to listen over and over again. ‘As the Whisper Grows’ is classic TCG sound, fast hardcore punk with horror lyrics and melody, with touch of metal aggression. Those songs are my personal favorites, but they change as I listen to this album over and over again, so you will have to find yours. If you are a fan, you will adore this record, if you are not, you will definitely become.
Britanske punk rock legende The Damned su objavili novi dugosvirajući album koji sadrži dvanaest pjesama. Album počinje pomalo horror atmosferičnom ‘The Invisible Man’ koja ima u sebi određenu dozu psihodelije, pogotovo u klavijaturnim dionicama. Dvije pjesme koje su također prije objavljene kao singlovi, a to su ‘You’re Gonna Realise’ i ‘Beware of the Clown’ su ubojice, pogotovo ova druga. Od svih starih punk rock bendova iz prvog vala tamo iz sedamdesetih, The Damned su mi uvijek nekako legli najviše, zato jer imaju taj darker štih, sa skoro grand guignol klavijaturama, atmosferom koja se može rezati nožem i odličnim melodijama i aranžmanima pjesama. To sve ne bi bilo dovoljno da nema pjevača Dave Vaniana i njegovog fenomenalnog glasa koji drži ovaj bend desetljećima. Fun fact, Dave Vanian je bio prvi pick novooformljenih Misfitsa devedesetih, ali je umjesto njega ipak upao Michale Graves. Često se zapitam kako bi i kamo bi Misfitsi otišli da je Dave preuzeo vokale. Najbolja stvar, bar meni na ovom albumu je ‘Western Promise’, u kojoj svo bogatstvo melodije i dubine Daveovog glasa dolazi do izražaja kao i svo bogatstvo zvuka ovog legendarnog benda. Ovaj album se može lako svrstati među top pet albuma u opusu ovog benda. Odlična kombinacija punk rocka, gothica, psihodelije na momente ukusno ubačene u strukture pjesama i nadasve, odlične melodije i napisane pjesme!
