(review) Rot – Rot(demo)

a1698109924_10

Rot are from Mexico and this is the demo that came out couple of months ago. This one contains 6 songs, one being Misfits cover of Braineaters. Rot was spawned as a result of long fascination with everything monstrous, especially zombies, so it was kinda natural to do music in direction of horror, meaning horror punk, even zombie punk as some would call it. The demo starts with acoustic guitar and sound of thunder in Deceso delivering ominous atmospheric intro to the things. All songs are done on acoustic guitar, with melodic yet vocals with too much effect on the voice, I would love to hear these songs with clean melodic vocals without any effects, Marque Z para Zombies would be much better sounding song done in that way. Misfits cover has too loud vocals and too quiet guitar, but this is underground, so everything passes. The rest of the songs are short but sweet and would love to hear it with fast drums, real band and they would sound great. No matter, check this one out and support your horror scene.

The Karnsteins – Fhtagntastic Necropunk

a3911818808_10

The Karnsteins are hailing from Bratislava, Slovakia and this is the first horror punk band from Slovakia on the pages of this zine with this nice Lovecraftian album title hehe. This record contains 9 songs of awesome horror punk with lots of uplifting melodies, singalong parts, nice choruses and clever use of movie samples. Okay, some of the songs sound a bit tongue in cheek humor, but no matter, that is the beauty of horror punk. Bordering between hardcore punk with faster songs like Ball of the damned, more punk rock songs like Necropogo this band rules. Especially songs like Count Kramula, Ghost of Charles Lee Ray and the title song are sure to win you over. Horror punk is so diverse, with so many influences coming in the song structures, that I love this small, but cohesive scene making it my favorite music in the world ever and I have been in the scene for almost thirty years now. Get this album, have a listen and write a word or two to the guys, I am sure they will appreciate it.

There may have been a shortage of gigs and festivals this year, but we can’t deny the incredible memories we have from previous years and the excitement for the return as we all recharge for the next round.

Flashback to April 2018, when waterweed were invited over from Japan for Manchester Punk Festival and their first European tour. In some instances, this feels like a lifetime ago but sometimes it seems only yesterday. A lot has changed since then, but what definitely hasn’t changed is the total awesomeness of waterweed. Following up Brightest with another a third excellent full length Diffuse in April 2019 on CD format.

We are super pleased to announce we will be pressing, not only Diffuse but waterweed to vinyl for the first time on December 4th 2020.
