(review) BURNT TAPES – GROWER (LOCKJAW RECORDS)

cover

Remember our old buddies Burnt Tapes from London? This time they released new e.p. with Lockjaw Records .

Instead of releasing it on cd or vinyl they took a different path. The e.p. comes with your Beech tree that can be planted to help local and global environment. Concerning the four songs on this record, this is still the style of sad, emotional punkrock these guys call regret punk. As I am listening to this one on Sunday morning having a coffee, I love how this sounds, even better than the last material.  My favorite is Dynasty, Die With Me, but also Greek Wood. All songs are excellent, last being acoustic Yuzi. This one is a keeper, so go grab it while you still can.

ABOUT THE RELEASE AND ARTISTS

Brightr (Laurie) on the how the split came together:

We’ve been talking about doing a split for a while, then lockdown
came and it seemed ideal for a bit of DIY creativity. It’s all
come together pretty quickly which has been brilliant. In my view
H_ngm_n are one of the most essential UK bands around at the moment,
when they’re full strength (with James battering the skins) it’s
incredible. However, solo, the songs take on an awesome different
force altogether and having seen Chris do it on so many nights
I’ve felt for a while it needed to be recorded and out there for
all to hear.

(Chris from) H_ngm_n on covering one of each other’s songs:

I’ve been trying to learn a bunch of Brightr songs throughout the
last few months (no chance I could learn the guitar parts!) but
yeah, touring together loads, I know the songs really well and so it
just made sense. It’s really strange hearing someone else cover
your song, but when Laurie sent over his version of
“Matchsticks” it was really humbling, and just kinda makes you
grateful for the good friends that can come out of playing music
together. Well excited for people to hear both covers!

(review) Death By Stereo – we´re all dying just in time

cover

This one is out for a while, but it is never late for good music. New Death By Stereo album is perfect in any sense. This Los Angeles based band delivered one hell of an album with 10 songs of hardcore energy, heartfelt melodies, melodic guitar riffs, fast drumming, group singalong backing vocals. Above all, what I love about this band and what stands them out above others is trademark vocals of Efrem Schulz, this guy sounds like an angel while singing melodic clean vocals, also when shouting angrily. I just cannot decide which songs to recommend, but I will go with three: California Addiction, I Sing For You(part deux) and Choose A Side Or Open Wide. Perfect album and one of the contenders for the hardcore punk record of the year in my choice!
