Pre-orders here

Western Addiction refuse to be confined to any preexisting genres. Their sound hop-scotches between blistering hard-core, cryptic lyrics, and an anxiety cyclone of moody rhythms. It is precisely these emotional juxtapositions that make their band so unique. Today, we’re thrilled to divert your attention to their lead single, “They Burned Our Paintings,” streaming via YouTube, Spotify, or anywhere that you get your digital fix. The track is lifted from their third full-length, Frail Bray, out May 15th, and is available for pre-order.

Working for the first time with producer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Jeff Rosenstock, Gouge Away), Western Addiction tracked Frail Bray live to tape—another first for them—at the Atomic Garden in Oakland in late 2019. Guest musicians feature Darius Koski (Swingin’ Utters) on viola, violin, piano, tambourine, and backup vocals on their track, “Wildflowers of Italy.” Another FAT family guest appearance is the powerhouse, Brenna Red, from The Last Gang! Brenna provides backup vocals for “The Leopard and the Juniper,” “Frail Bray,” and “Rose’s Hammer II.”

Vocalist Jason Hall expounds on their latest effort below:

With a cosmic shot of pure irony, our new record, Frail Bray, is about…hope. It’s easy to be terrible. It’s hard to be thoughtful, hopeful, and kind. Let’s try. The first single, “They Burned Our Paintings,” is about degenerate art in the 1920s and 30s.

(review) A Vulture Wake/7YEARS-Split 7 Inch(Awkward Aardvark Records)

cover

A Vulture Wake were already featured on the pages of this zine. This is a melodic hardcore punk band from USA, kinda punkrock supergroup, although I hate this word very much, and they are featured with one song on this record, called Collateral Damage which is nice midtempo emotional punkrock song with beautiful vocal lines and nice chorus.

7Years from Italy were also already featured on the pages of this zine when we reviewed their super album a while ago. This time, they are featured with two songs with The pride of a wounded sister being my favorite, but also The party is over(featuring Chad Price) is also a great listening. I don`t know, but Mattero Caldari and his crew remind me a lot of Lagwagon, delivering really mighty emotional punkrock with their cool songs. This is a great little e.p.

8,5/10

Greek emotive punks, Hoi-Poi, release new single and announce new album

Hoi-Poi Schoolwave 2018 (1)

Hoi-Poi, emotive punk/post hardcore band from Thessaloniki, GR (FFO: Title Fight, Hot Water Music, Sunny Day Real Estate), have just released their new single “Chief End”, taken from their upcoming album “Sain’t Adorable” that comes out on the 3rd of April 2020 via Nasty Cut Records. The song’s lyrics are about the sudden appearance of self-doubt in the shape of an apparition and the music perfectly reflects the album’s overall sound, in which keyboards and synths are in harmony with a mixture of raw post-hardcore riffage. “Chief End” is available on all streaming platforms, while the album will be available digitally as well as on vinyl, CD and cassette (available for pre-order on the band’s Bandcamp page).

Hoi-Poi is a four piece post-hardcore/emotive punk outfit from Thessaloniki, Greece. The band started off in early 2011 as a cover band trio and in August 2013 they released their first original EP, entitled “Powerhouse Dynamics”. After a streak of live shows, during the winter of 2015 they released their demo, Happen. After 9 months of independently recording, mixing and mastering their debut album titled “Forever Knows Best” at their DIY studio, they released it in December 2016. Two years later, in March 2018, the band released their latest mini album, “Dread and Vision”. During 2019, Hoi-Poi recorded their upcoming album, “Sain’t Adorable”, which was recorder and mixed by Jacopo Fokas (Despite Everything) at Villa Giuseppe Recordings in Athens and mastered by Jason Livermore at The Blasting Room in the US. The album will be released in April 2020 and it will be followed by an extended Greek tour with Forever Unclean (DK) and an EU tour in May.
