(review) THE FLY DOWNS – At This Point In Time

It´s been a long time since I listened to some good pop punk and The Fly Downs released their new full length, so it was about time for me to enjoy some great melodic punk. Trio from Ottawa released 13 songs on this record. Music is melodic punk leaning more heavily on pop punk influences than on faster skate punk side of things. That means punk rock guitar riffs with strong and fantastic melodies, sweet vocal lines that I love and backing vocal harmonies and above all good songs. My personal favorites are Raving Reviews, Crashing Down and Nowhere To Go somehow the most on this record. Vocals remind me at times of Russ Rankin of Good Riddance especially at faster awesome songs like Head Held High, one of the songs having more faster almost a bit hardcore punk vibe. Lyrics are personal but, some songs are pure fun, but I can totally relate to most of them. Go listen this great album.

About Down Memory Lane:

Hailing from the suburbs of Montreal, Down Memory Lane was formed in 2015 with the only desire of playing good ol’ 90’s style punk rock and have a great time. Since, the band has joined Thousand Islands Records and released three EPs sung in two different languages. The quintet has shared the stages with the likes of Ten Foot Pole, Bigwig, Straightline and SUBB, and performed at Pouzza Fest, Music 4 Cancer and Desbouleaux Fest.

(review) Slovenians – Sinners e.p. (pogorecords)

Slovenians from Brussels, Belgium are in no way strangers to the pages of this zine, because I reviewed their last release a while ago. Now, they have a new e.p. out and it contains four songs of unrelenting skate punk madness. Negative Influence is for me the best song on this e.p. being fast skate punk anthem with lots of energy, harsh yet melodic vocal lines and catchy main melody. Get A Job is more garage punk influenced mid tempo more rock vibe song and it sounds interesting. Mobilehome has bass intro followed with almost sludgy song start and dirty guitar riffs sending raw punk spirit across our sound speakers to our hearts and minds. Vocals are spoken and in French on this one, varying between singing, angry reciting and whispering. Newbee In Town is again faster more straightforward punk song and my other highlight of this record. Good one.
