(review) Bucovina – Suntem Aici

Although I love Romania as mystic country of mountains and deep forests, I have not listened to Bucovina until this new opus. The band has been in the scene since 2008 and they got their name after a historical region on the northern slopes of the northeastern Carpathians. This is their fifth full length opus, first in four years. This one offers ten songs of melodic and epic folk metal mixed with black and some little death metal influences. The guitar melodies are astonishing and fantastic leaving me with goosebumps all over my skin. Vocals vary from black screams, death metal growling and multiple clean vocal harmonies with such beautiful voice that reminds me a lot of Vintersorg. Lyrics are in Romanian language so I don’t really understand but let the music do the talking. What I understood from the translator and titles, it is about nature and Romanian folklore. This is album just made to listen multiple times on a winter’s day after or during the walk in the pine woods of our North under a steel grey sky.

(review) Wormgod – Where Old Curses Rest

Romanian bands are something special. This magic country that gave us Vlad Tepes and shrouded in Carpathian fog provides yet another superb opus to our black metal hearts. This time it is Wormgod from Bucharest area. This duo gave us their first full length although the band has been in existence since 2009 releasing one demo and single, but it has been nine years of ominous quiet and then this jewel. What to expect on this one? Well, you can bet that these nine hymns are excellent and I recommend them to any fan of melodic black metal with lots of atmosphere and melancholy in the song structures. This album reminds me a lot of nineties black metal and the reason why I love this music, the mix of aggression and melody, melancholy and battle. From the all out blast beat epic melody of My Blood, across more mid tempo and atmospheric The Blossom Of Fear which is one of my personal favorites, to epic Failure’s Reign and Olden Crusade, this one is a black metal opus par excellence. There are some a bit more modern parts, I would dare to call them post black metal in some song structures but that parts bring more eeriness and haunting feeling. Lyrics are, as you can see in English language and they deal with more personal side of hauntings, dealing with demons and darkness. Vocals are excellent, screamed but not too over the edge, fit just great in the songs. This is one of the better black metal releases this year.

Taking Back August has released ‘Another Day To Live’, their latest single!

Romanian Modern Metalcore band Taking Back August has released “Another Day To Live”, their latest single!

The new song is built around corrosive, massive riffs, over which a volcanic rhythm is cleverly arranged. Alex Precup’s voice pierces your heart like a drill thanks to its dual nature: Heaven and Hell.

The atmospheric synths enhance the sound of the song, giving it a special flavor and stirring up waves of emotions in you, the listener.

The band comments on the new single:

For each of us, the song symbolizes an episode in life that we had to face head-on without looking back.

It presents a broader view of where we envision going in our style, with softer parts, more technically diverse synths, and alternating clean and screaming voices.

Modern Metalcore band Taking Back August hails from BucharestRomania. The band was formed in 2020 by musicians Alex Precup (vocals), Claudiu Ene (bass), George Motei (guitar), Alex Iliescu (guitar), and Moroianu Gabriel (drums).

The first single, “Welcome Home”, was released in October 2020 along with a lyric video. The song’s message, a well-crafted one, managed to overcome the barriers imposed by the listeners’ expectations. Currently, the five members of the band are composing the songs to be featured on the first studio album, which will be released at the end of 2022.
