(gig report)Fakofbolan celebrated their 25th birthday in Unterhund!
Unterhund in Ormož, Slovenia was once again a place to be on a Saturday night. After recent Slapshot gig which was awesome, it was time for another punk legends to step on the stage of this beautiful club.
Fakofbolan are now legendary punk band from Pula, Croatia. When I was a kid growing up in a time of war and darkness in the early nineties, their songs helped me carry on through all that shit and we were singing those songs during every birthday party bash, we were all we had back then, no internet, only fanzines and letters and record/tape trading.
Now, Fakofbolan are celebrating 25 years in the scene, okay they had a pause of couple of years in between, but who cares? We were in Unterhund when they played there back in 2012.and I still remember that show with a smile on my face, so I was happy to go there again, being near our hometown and it was Saturday night.
When we arrived, there were quite a few people talking, joking and drinking in front of the club and inside. Time quickly passed in good company and the gig started around 11 pm. The band which opened the gig was Orkester Selotejp from Slovenia. Those guys played some version of ska/rock/punk and their set was long, but they just weren´t my cup of tea, but the people had fun and that´s what is most important.
Fakofbolan stepped on stage, checked their instruments and without too many talk started their set, 25 songs for the 25 years of band. Their set was made of songs from all of their releases, the last album from 2014.that doesn´t suit me so well and all of the oldies but goldies like Ulica, Da li znaš, Ostali smo, Neznani junaci…The people were dancing, singing along and having fun, Šapo and company from the band were happy and the gig was superb. I was so happy when they played old songs like Imamo Hrvatsku and Ropstvo je sloboda. The time passed by in a flash and the gig was over, so we went home a bit tired, but happy after another great punk gig. Cheers and many, many thanks to the people of Unterhund for doing such a fine job with promoting great gigs.
(record review)ODPISANI-Prva Vrsta
Odpisani are hardcore punk veterans from Pomurje region of Slovenia. They recently released their new record and I am really happy that I was able to listen and review it for this zine.
These guys have been around for more than 20 years now. I remember first hearing their music and watching them play live in 1996.in my hometown at Tzscha open air festival. Now, 22 years later, their new record called Prva Vrsta is out. The record contains 6 songs. What comes to mind upon the first hearing is the clarity and power of the production. Tue Madsen(Sick Of It All, Madball…)did an awesome job with the record. Of course, that would not be enough without the quality of the material itself. Let me write my impression of the songs:
Demoni-Nice, almost nostalgic guitar hook in the beginning of the song and politically alegorical lyrics mixed with aggressive and fast, but still melodic hardcore punk make this one of the best songs on this record.
Marsovci-As soon as I heard this one live, I knew that it is a hit. Humorous ode to drinking and friendship with a slight touch of science fiction and anthemic singalong chorus make this one my favorite of this record and Odpisani live shows. Blazen-In my opinion the most angry and harsh song on the record, emphasized by angry Borut˙s vocals and guitar/drum machine gun staccato.
Pištolo Mon-Another sing along anthemic song just made for live gigs, for hugging your sweaty pit pal and singing along holding your fists high in the air. Great sarcastic lyrics of this song.
Alfa-The most metallic song of the record. Also, the song with most groove and probably the best lyrics and awesome chorus.
Lotmerk Underground-This one is also live hit at the gigs. Ode to beer, streets and friendship and I love it.
The lyrics on this record are understandable to us who live nearby and get what the guys are singing about. But, many may have problem with understanding the lyrics because they are done in Slovenian dialect spoken in this part of the country. So, that might be a slight minus for the band. But, considering that they are doing great job for more than 20 years now, I don˙t think they consider it a disadvantage of some sort. Good one!
