(record review)SLUND/MAGGOT BATH-SPLIT

We have already featured Slund on the pages of this zine when we reviewed the last release by this Slovenian one man powerviolence grindcore band. This is the brand new release, the new music and this time in the shape of split record with Maggot Bath.

Slund side of the record contains 5 songs in the known way this band/project makes music. This means ultrafast powerviolence hardcore mixed with some grindcore and sludgy slow parts thrown in for good measure. What I love about Slund is a clever mix of samples and autoirony with black humour and engaged lyrics. The songs deal with poseurs, some personal issues, anti religion…Slund is certainly worth your time and listening if you are into such music.

Maggot Bath side of the record contains 4 songs in the similar way musically, meaning a mixture of fast and aggressive hardcore punk powerviolence and some sludge slowness with screaming vocals. These guys come from down under, from Australia. There are no lyrics enclosed so I don´t know that those guys are singing about but the titles like Pubic Wig or Happy Ending give you a clue, don´t they? This is a fine release and I like Slund part of the record better.

(record review)REACH/LAID TO REST-Split e.p.

We already featured Reach from Pomurje, Slovenia on the pages of this zine. Formed in 2016.they play modern hardcore with a lot of groove and lot of harsh and metallic riffs but with a nod to the old school influences too.

Reach side of this e.p. contains two songs, first No Rest speaks about never stopping and always striving for your goals no matter what. The guys made a diy video for this song and you can watch it below. The second song, Sold Soul is in my opinion better, excellent mixture of faster straight forward hardcore and modern groove parts, a bit Madball styled if I must compare it to some other band. Nice to see that Pomurje hardcore/punk scene is alive and well although small.

As far Laid to Rest side is concerned, I never heard of these guys prior to this record. Laid to Rest is a quintet from Jesenice, Slovenia, and they are playing energetic hardcore punk with some metalic influences and I like their stuff a lot. Sleep Tight is a song about what all of us who are long into hardcore punk face at least once a month. Meaning, questions that are so stupid that I no longer wish to answer them like when will you grow up and when will you quit that music and stuff. All that is packed into apocalyptic hardcore punk sounding dirty and angry. The second song, namely Hellbound has some personal lyrics about fighting your own demons and personal Hell. That is the fast and energetic song laced with some groove. This e.p. is a nice record that documents the colaboration between western and eastern Slovenian hardcore scene.

(record review)THE MOR(R)ONS-“Lager”

The punkrock scene in Slovenia is not very large, but it is rather compact with awesome bands, some labels and promoters doing fantastic job with organizing great gigs and festivals!

cover

The Mor(r)ons are coming from Kranj area and this is their third album. I listened to the record and reviewed it for this webzine. I must admit that I was blown away by the sound of this record and the music it contains. There is a total of 14 anthems on this record and each and every one of them makes me wish that I wrote them. The music is straightforward fast and faster melodic punkrock, skatepunk fastcore. Mamma mia, I can only imagine how this sounds live because I didn´t check this band live yet, but I consider it a must! The lyrics are in English language and the vocals sometimes reminded me of early Fat Mike but that is only my opinion and you will maybe hear it differently. This guys really know how to play and write great songs. There are couple of my favorites in this record. First “Etuda” being for me the best song on the record. “Lose Yourself” makes me think about how music saves, it is not just a proverb, but thousand times proven truth. The third one is “Sixth Mass Extinction Cycle” because of the awesome melody in the song which made me listen to it over and over again! Great album!
