When Bolt Thrower called it quits there was a vast open space left on the extreme metal scene regarding war metal or poetry of war done in atmospheric and dark way. Sabaton does great job in power metal with war themes, also Minenwerfer in black metal, but I have heard only words of praise for 1914 from Ukraine. Besides great name, fantastic band photos, these Ukrainians offer great music and I am ashamed to say, but this is their first record I have listened to and I am awed. This is kinda conceptual album with WWI thematics starting from awesome Intro that is interesting to this region and us who live in it, because it is Tamo Daleko, Serbian folk song. First opener hits you away with vocals screaming Dobrodošli u Sarajevo, talking about assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo 1914 by Gavrilo Princip, which started WWI. Lyrics are fantastic and 1914 s mixture of blackened death metal, doom, atmosphere done with samples, synths and electronics provides picture of Hell on Earth which was that war. The album also featured prominent guests as Nick Holmes and Sasha Boole. I want to hear this band live. I am sure that would be an awesome experience. Recommended songs: …and a Cross Now Marks His Place, Mitt Gott Fur Konig Und Vaterland.
Ukrainian folk metal band Teren released new single. This song is about the tragedy of a person who becomes a monster against their will. Every time she looks in the mirror and sees that she turns into a monster. Her life will never be normal again, she will never be herself again. Everything that was dear, hated, or even what she was indifferent to – everything will disappear.
When? Soon. For a long time? Forever … Everyone has their own monster. Someone is afraid of losing beauty, memory, wealth. But perhaps the worst thing is to lose yourself.
Eastern Europe still has vast and undiscovered underground scene and Complete! from Ukraine are one such jewel of that scene. They recently released their debut full length album and I am so happy I had pleasure to listen and review it. The record contains nine fast paced songs and the music is no holds barred, no philosophy, no bullshit old school fast melodic punk/skatepunk like we used to listen and still love, meaning nineties touch all the way with some modern hardcore influences here and there. The lyrics are in English and deal with personal themes, yet are still political in a way, and they are very well concepted and written. The vocals are mainly melodic, but at times screamed and shouted in hardcore way. The whole album is one energy bomb and I like such bands, never enough of fast paced melodic, well played songs. My favorites: Rejected, Endless Winter, Static State.
