Punk Rock Dad by Jim Lindberg-The book for all those punkrockers who are Dads and for all those who are not!

Jim Lindberg is best known as the singer for one of the best American punk hardcore bands from California, namely Pennywise. Jim has been shouting on stages throughout the world for three decades now and I saw him performing live with Pennywise a couple of months ago in Slovenia, at Punk Rock Holiday festival in Tolmin and they were awesome.

I also saw the movie The Other F Word with Jim as some kind of lead character in the documentary about Dads in punkrock bands and how they cope with the stress of constant touring with the band and being away from home for long not seeing their loved ones. The movie finished kinda sad for me as a fan of Pennywise with Jim leaving the band to spend more time with his family.

Fortunately, Jim returned to the band and we can enjoy Pennywise again, but I had absolutely no idea that he published a book simply called Punk Rock Dad. It took some time, but I finally put my hands and eyes on the book and read it.

First to mention, I have read the book in less than three days, it is written so beautifully that words and sentences just flow around you and then you are sad because you realized that you already finished it. Second, book is written in so much good spirit and humour that I caught myself laughing aloud in the morning while I was reading the book and enjoying my first morning coffee. Pennywise as a band and the events that transpire during tours is mentioned very little in this book, it is mainly concentrated on Jim and his tries to come to terms being a Dad, then dealing with all the sweet troubles that the first baby brings in the house and life. Jim has three daughters and beileve me, you will also laugh loud while reading the funny situations and things that happened to him while watching over kids, changing diapers, cleaning puke from bathroom tiles and so on…

Having no kids, I could not put myself in the situations Jim was, but as I said all of us who dont have kids can easily read this book. If I had to describe it in one sentence, the book is half humorous handbook in a fanzine punk way, half comedy movie.

(record review)CRADLE OF FILTH-“Cryptoriana-The Seductiveness of Decay”(Nuclear Blast)

crypto

I always loved this band since I first heard their records back in 1998. By then, they were already established force to reckon with in the extreme metal. The first five records are a must for every fan of melodic, dark, extreme symphonic metal. Now in 2017.CoF have released their album number twelve. The LP version contains 9 tracks plus Annihilator cover. The songs are in the vein of the last few Cradle albums. “Heartbreak and Seance”-the first single from the album is classic CoF style being a harsh metal song but also full of emotion, drama and melody. “Wester Vespertine” is an anthemic brutal masterpiece showing me all the things because of which I learned to love this band through all these years. “The Seductiveness of Decay” gives a nod towards the bands roots having a nice Iron Maidenesque galloping part in the middle. For me, the best song on the album is “Vengeful Spirit” having a great female spoken/sung melodic part and being almost trash metal song. “Death And The Maiden” gives the album epic ending it deserves. For us fans that love Cradle, this album will be great and for all others that dont like the band, they will sure not start liking it after this one.

(record review)360 FLIP-“Peace on Earth?”

360 FLIP - Peace On Earth- - cover

We are continuing to love and admire the Italian hardcore punk scene here in this zine. 360 Flip come from Venice area, Italy and this is their first diy ep consisting of 6 excellent songs. I first noticed that this band uses a lot of samples between the songs and using them as intros which I totally love and in my opinion samples can only improve the dramatic effect of some songs if used in a right way. The songs are in English language and the music is fast paced melodic hardcore punk with lyrics cleverly balancing between political and more personal themes. They also use some saxophone on “Pixels” and great gang backing vocals on some songs reminding me of more harder hardcore bands. My favourite on this record is energetic opener “Oceans Have No Memory” which is an absolute hit on this record. This is superb ep with great music and I can hardly wait what the full album will sound like, I am sure it will be a bomb!
