(review) The Great Awake – ‘QUIT’

The Great Awake are from far away across the globe, namely from Sydney, Australia. There are twelve songs on this beautiful record. This band play their vision of melodic punk rock, kind of mixture between old school nineties sound of all those Fat/Epitaph bands that I grew up with and learned to love this music so much, and more mid tempo modern emotional melodic punk not unlike Flatliners or The Menzingers with kind of nervous guitar melody, bass and vocals bordering between singing clean and melodic, but also screaming melodic at times. Songs like ‘A Shitty Midlife Crisis’, ‘Our 20s Have Stopped Roaring’ and ‘Too Stubborn To Quit’ are lyrically and musically totally something that I can relate to in every way, being in the scene for thirty years now. We are speaking here of tight incredible musicianship and great songwriting what makes this record a secret little jewel of the punk rock scene.

(tv series) Better Call Saul – more than just a spin off series!

Got to admit, Vince Gilligan is a master, creating two of the best series that made millions of people watch, namely Breaking Bad and spin off Better Call Saul, which he created with Peter Gould. This last one is a spin of the more popular Breaking Bad, with lawyer Saul Goodman played by fantastic Bob Odenkirk, his trials and tribulations and describing the way how Jimmy McGill became Saul Goodman and what led to events in Breaking Bad and after that. First two seasons are more of humor courtroom dramedy with couple of crime understories beneath it all, but the third season starts it all, the rise of crime Salamanca family, rise of Gustavo Fring and his empire, Saul’s relationship with his older brother Charles and his girlfriend, also lawyer Kim Wexler, entangling more and more into the crime world until the bittersweet ending in season six. Actors are superb, besides Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn as Kim is fantastic, so is Giancarlo Esposito as Gus, the bad guy, Jonathan Banks as Mike, man for dirty jobs and this series also tells his story how he became what he was in Breaking Bad. It is beautiful to see how Giancarlo Esposito became one of my favorite actors performing roles of bad guys. So, as you can see, characters of two series interplay in both, so I recommend parallel watching of both as I did, so you can expect Breaking Bad review also on the pages of this webzine soon. This one stays long in your memory after you watched it. Although the last season is a bit too long with 13 episodes, compared to previous seasons that have ten episodes per season.

(review) Smugly Ugly – ‘Alumni Weekend’

Now, this band was refreshing to listen to. Smugly Ugly are from New Jersey area and this is their debut album. This one contains eight songs of interesting music. It all sometimes sounds like noise punk with Sonic Youth influences for example in ‘Smugly Ugly’. Also there are brass instruments like trumpet, trombone, saxophone and also keyboards delivering melodic favorites and hits like my favorite ‘One Last Chance’. But, that is not all, ‘Feeling Gr8’ delivers pop punk like it was played in early 2000s with all those bands like Blink 182 and similar came out with their best music. This is a short album but so varied and interesting to listen to that you just got to spin it one more time or two times in order two catch all what you missed.
