Riptides are hailing from Italy and this is their first EP out now. This one contains four songs. The music of Riptides is so much more and more complicated than it could be explained in one sentence. This is basically progressive death metal. But here is also metalcore, even hardcore roots in the skeletons of songs themselves. Also, here is djent and progressive metal thrown into above all smart songwriting throughout the EP. Songs are not too long, like it often is a case with similar styled bands, quite the contrary. Songs are not long and interesting every second of listening. I am usually not an avid fan of such style of extreme music, but I really enjoyed every single second of this one. I love the interplay between brutal death metal growling and clean singing, with some really eerie melodies like in excellent ‘The Deepest Ocean’. The other of four songs that is my personal favorite is ‘Paranoia’ which struck me like a heavy hitter. This one is heavy, melodic and progressive. Go listen!
German punk rockers DONOTS released new full length album and it contains fifteen songs. There was a term in the nineties, I think it is still in use called Deutschpunk being all those German pop punk/melodic punk bands with specific style and German lyrics. DONOTS are veterans of the scene and this album brings melodic punk rock with songs in German lyrics and mainly mid tempo emotional punk rock with beautiful vocals and I always say, German language is such great language for punk being it angry hardcore punk or more melodic punk rock. There is occasional excursion into more faster hardcore skate punk waters like with ‘1.21. Gigawatt’ or reggae with one of my favorites ‘Hunde los’. There are also pop punk influences like in ‘Traurige Roboter’ and more street punk sing along choruses like ‘Apokalypse Stehplatz Innenraum’ and back to hardcore punk with ‘Es tut nur weh, wenn ich lache’. I saw this band one year playing Punk Rock Holiday and their show was a blast, so I would love to check them out in some club show, I believe that would be awesome. In the meantime, check out this album. Good one.
Lüger are hailing from Montreal, Canada and are not to be confused with Croatian punk band with the same name. This band is active since 2013 and this is their second full length opus containing 10 songs. This band is a perfect soundtrack to post apocalypse Mad Max remnants of humanity when only most bloodthirsty and most devious roam this planet and raise Hell, drink and smoke, then raise some Hell again and do some occult rites on the night of full moon. Music is a mixture of Motorhead punk induced mayhem, occult doom metal and melodic metal with anthemic epic choruses like awesome ‘Black Acid’, more biker rock oriented as in ‘Motorcity Hellcats’, There are couple of longer songs here, but the do not get boring as some similar bands that lean more on stoner sometimes tend to be. These guys mean business, they will tie your body to a bike, drag your ass through the wasteland and laugh about it later during dinner over roast coyote. My personal favorites on this one: ‘The Sacred Skull’, ‘Filthy Streets’ and ‘Bloodmoon’. Good album.
