(record review)MENTAL STRIKE-“Final-E”

It took a long time to be released, but it is finally here. The debut Mental Strike record!

cover

This band comes from Laško area, Slovenia. They play old school skatepunk with a lot of old school hardcore influences. When I saw them play live in Lendava, Slovenia couple of years ago, the reminded me a lot of Gorilla Biscuits not so musically but they somehow have the same energy as GB have. This album contains 9 songs with all of the lyrics in English language. The themes are some great mix of personal and political issues. The song structures, especially guitars also have some metallic influences and this album is the lesson how to play modern but old school hardcore punk, not to sound to mellow or like a clone. In my opinion the absolute highlights of this album are “Start Today” and “My Final Resolution”.

(record review)VAGALES-“Vagales”

South America just never ceases to amaze me with their rich and various punk hardcore scene. This time I listened to and reviewed the new record by Vagales.

cover

These guys hail from the town Cali in Colombia and play an energetic mix of melodic hardcore and punk. As I can understand this record is their debut album and it is awesome. The album contains 8 tracks. The vocals are angry but also melodic and just right for this kind of hardcore punk. If I must compare the music with someone then I would say that the guys remind me a bit of 88 Fingers Louie only a bit more angry. The lyrics are in Spanish, so I dont understand what they are singing about, but it sounds damn good. The choruses are anthemic and I think that the live shows of this band are awesome. This is a great record and one more proof how the underground network is invincible. Top songs: “Levantate”, “No Te Quiero”.

(record review)5¢Freakshow-“S/T”

This band comes from Calgary, Alberta and this is, as I understand their debut studio effort. This ep contains 5 songs of horrorpunk mayhem mixed with a lot of psychobilly influence in the song structures.

Vocally, the band leans more on a harsh side of the things, but adding enough melody to be memorable and catchy. I have said it for million times and I say it again, I just love when horrorpunk bands use samples from the movies and this band does it during the whole e.p. My favourite song on the e.p. is “Zombie Girl” being the most melodic song on the record and I listened to it couple of times in a row. Time passes quickly while listening to this e.p. and I really wish these guys record a whole full album and I cant wait to hear it. We will hear of this band more in the future I am sure.
