(record review)SLED-“A Better You”(Bird Attack Records)

This is a long awaited debut album, by SLED, released on Bird Attack Records. This band was formerly known as Pinhole Down, but they never released an album, so they changed their name into Slade and made some awesome music and released this album.

cover

Sled was formed by Garrett Wadford, mainman of Bird Attack Records, whom I had an honour to meet and talk to at Punk Rock Holiday in Slovenia in 2016.and this year, so I can say he is a cool and one of the friendliest guys I have met in the punkrock scene nowadays.

Back to the album. It contains ten songs of fast paced and energetic skatepunk/melodic hardcore made with a touch of metal influence and played ferociously and with heart and soul. The guitars are shredding and have more than one awesome melodic hook. The vocals are kinda harsh but at the same time singing great melodies and they are neither snotty or too mellow. The lyrics are as I understand and hear, the nice mix of politics and personal. I really loves this record, it has no instant great hit on it, but it is an excellent energetic melodic hardcore record as a whole. Top songs: “Numb and Dumb”, “Recidivist”.

Time for some crust d-beat from South America: Detësto

Detësto are d-beat crust hardcore punk band coming from city called Campinas, Brasil. They released three songs on the compilation called “O SOM DO ABISMO” vol.1  with a bunch of other Brasilian bands and I really love bands from that country because they have some special vibe down there. Knowing the poverty, many bands really live what they sing about. Compilation is released via Discördia records (Fofão/Besthöven DIY label). As for this band three songs, they are your typical d-beat crust punk, nothing new and special, but I really enjoyed listening to it. I cant wait for the new e.p. which the band plans to release in the first half of 2018.

Also, drop a few words to the guys, I am sure it will mean much to them:

(record review)THE FRIGHT-“Canto V”(Steamhammer/SPV)

coverI really dont know how come I have never heard The Fright before. This is already their fifth studio album and first one to come out on Steamhammer/SPV label.

The album contains 10 songs of excellent melodic gothic rock with metal and punk influences. The music pays tribute to the bands influences like I hear a bit of Type O Negative in “Drowned in Red” or 69Eyes in some of the songs and a bit of To/Die/For in some song structures, but that is only me. Of course, the band also has an impressive dose of their own touch and I really loved their music.

The guitars and drums are more metalic than poppy and the singing and lyrics hold just that, how shall I put it, German sense of melodrama and tragedy mixed with hope and pain. Weltschmerz? Sorrow? Wickedness? You bet! All inclusive on this record. My absolute highlight and the best song on this record is “Century Without a Name” which I listened for a couple of times and I wish that I wrote such hit. Very beautiful song. In all, great album.
