(record review)ALLOUT HELTER-“The Notion of Control”(Bird Attack Records)

Allout Helter come from Denver and this is their new album, second full length and first one done for awesome Bird Attack Records.

00-allout_helter-the_notion_of_control-(web)-art-2017

The album contains 12 tracks of great melodic hardcore punk done with balls and emotion. The album is produced by Trevor Reilly(A Wilhelm Scream).

What I like about this band is that they are really tight with their instruments and there is a lot of metalic influence and riffs in the song structures. The vocals kinda remind me of A Wilhelm Scream and Authority Zero, meaning the singer shouts but also does great melodic lines and this album is so fast paced that the music is one great melodic energetic bomb!

For me the highlights of the album are “Andromeda IV” having great melodic lines in the chorus that made me wish I wrote them, and also “Anthropocene”but all of the songs are excellent and it is really hard to pick some highlights, but of course, everyone will have their favorites, depending on taste. This is an awesome album!

(record review)WOLFMEN OF MARS-Dont Let It In

Wolfmen of Mars are hailing from Boston and this is their new record.

cover

For those of you who dont know them and have never heard of them, they play instrumental music which combines 70-s and 80-s sf atmosphere with horror and some rock and surf influences.

Usually I really dont like instrumental bands a priori, but there are some exceptions and this is one of them. This album contains 8 songs that could easily be soundtrack to walk in the Autumn woods, flying in a spaceship and killing someone. The top tracks for me are certainly “Della Strega” which reminds me a lot on Carpenter movie themes or Italian giallo Argento and Bava movies. The other definitely outstanding highlight of this album is “At the Barn”. Wolfmen of Mars really have a lot of  music out on their Bandcamp page, so check it out if you love such music.

(book review)ROGER MIRET with JOE WIEDERHORN-“My Riot:Agnostic Front, Grit, Guts&Glory”

I was at Punk Rock Holiday Festival this year in August when I found out that this book will be coming out soon and I immediately knew that I have to read it.

Roger-Miret-Book-Cover

Agnostic Front is a New York Hardcore band that influenced so many people in the scene and I still vividly remember that I saw their show twice in the last year and a half and they will always remain in memory being in top five shows that I saw. Roger Miret is the singer for Agnostic Front and hardcore legend and this book is his life story. The book is written with the help provided by Joe Wiederhorn and you can read it as one of the most intense thriller dramas that you ever read. You can almost imagine the movie made based on this book, but modern Holywood would only ruin it. The book gives us insight in Mirets early childhood and moving from Cuba to USA, living on the streets and in the squats of Lower East Side New York.

Of course, all of the Agnostic Front history is in this book, from the early United Blood days until nowadays and the book gives insight on many NYHC icons and the facts that I never knew before. Also, Miret gives us a picture of his personal life, relationships and his kids, the family that helped him make it through the darkest times in his life.

What really astonished me is the level of violence that was normal back in those days at the shows and in front of the clubs and I am really glad that I was not part of the scene engrossed in violence. After reading this book, I can say with certainty that Agnostic Front is one of the rare bands in the hardcore scene that really lived through what they sing in their lyrics.

This book is one of the best books I have read this year.
