(record review)ADRAGARD-“From the burning mist”(Perkun Records)

Italy has one of the richest and in my opinion most awesome underground scene in Europe and I am always very happy when I have the opportunity to listen and discover new bands from that scene. This time I listened and reviewed the latest Adragard album out on Perkun Records.

I think that it was circa 1996.or 1997.when I read in one old Metal Hammer of Rock Hard issue and interview with Infernus from Gorgoroth where he stated that black metal is not music for everyone´s ears and it is ugly, grim, emotional but also aggressive and desperate art, it went somehow like that. Now, 20 and something years after, I still couldn´t agree more. Black metal is art and it is hard, grim and not everyone finds beauty inside of it. Adragard have been started in 1997.as a project but now they have full lineup and new full length album. What to expect? 7  songs of old school pure underground black metal. The guitar work is grim, fast but also has some parts that make this album great. What I found interesting are many slower atmospheric parts like for example “Eremo”, the only song in Italian language, others are all in English. The lyrics deal with personal demons and desolation, nature, end of the world, that it how I interpreted them for myself while listening to the album. This is grim, raw, a bit necro, but also melodic and heartfelt album that all the fans of such style will love. I know I did. Bands like these show that the scene is alive and well which is a great thing.

(record review)MATALOBOS-“Until time has lost all meaning”(Concreto Records)

Matalobos are hailing from Mexico, this is their second studio opus out on Concreto Records. I listened and reviewed the record for this webzine, so here are my impressions.

Formed in 2014., Matalobos play an interesting mix of doom and melodic death metal. This is an interesting record to listen to. Why? Because when I saw that there are only three songs on, I thought that it´s going to be again one of those long and pretty boring funeral doom records. Now I am glad that I was wrong. “Of ghosts and yearning” starts as a typical doom song but evolves into excellent melodic death metal song, not unlike some European bands of that genre, which is no wonder since legendary Dan Swanö at Unisound did the mastering for this record. This is the longest song on the record but with three or four interesting parts in the song structure never gets boring. “In flesh engraved” is a beautiful, almost whole melodic death metal song with faster parts and energy that fills your body while listening. “La luz de dia muerte” is an atmospheric instrumental with trumpet adding to the atmosphere of some film noire in this song and it is awesome. Great record!

With any group creative process there is eventually going to be a clash of creative visions. This track is about feeling the pressure and tension of those differences,” says lead singer James Ash. “We wanted to highlight some types of different struggles the band has gone through over the years” says guitarist Dan Ralph, “such as constantly being late, quitting for more illustrious opportunities, dealing with creative differences, and most importantly… the proper technique for body-checking a bandmate through the wall.”

The album was produced by James Ash at Kremation Studios, mixed by Henrik Udd (Bring Me the Horizon, Architects, A Breach of Silence) and mastered by Ermin Hamidovic (Periphery, Devin Townsend Project) at Systematic Productions.

Pre-order the full album on iTunes, Amazon, or Google Play, and stream the singles via Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Pandora, iHeartRadio, with more options available here.
