(record review)Brix´n Mortar-Freshcut(single)

Brix´n Mortar are young band from Salem, Massatchusetts formed in 2018. This is their first single, released as an announcement for the upcoming full length record. I listened and reviewed it for our zine.

This trio is formed in 2018.and they play their version of oi with hardcore/punk and they do it pretty good. This single features two songs. Besides the title song which is a true blood pumping oi/streetpunk song starting slowly and evolving the guitar melody into tight streetpunk with hardcore guitar background. What I love about this band are dual vocals, one harsh street oi and second more melodic one. The harsh voiced singer reminds me a lot of Discipline from Holland and I love it. The title song lyrics are about friendship, going to shows, proving yourself in the scene and singing along with Micky Fitz, may he rest in power. Awesome song. The kinda b-side of the single is Suburban Murders starting nicely with piano and guitar melody like some ballad. But, don´t be fooled, this is superb melodic streetpunk anthem, I still get goosebumps when listening to this one. The lyrics to this one are more personal about love and pride, being what you really are. I love the sound of the voice and harmony of the girl who did the backing vocals for this song. For me, this one is better than the title song. I can´t wait for the full album!

Lockjaw Records are strong believers in the spirit of collaboration, and in supporting other small, independents businesses. As a crew of coffee snobs, they’re also extremely excited to be working with Sham City on this limited roast.

“I’m super excited to be working with a label like Lockjaw for this collab. I love to work with other DIY businesses that are doing interesting things independently of the mainstream; Lockjaw totally embodies that. Coffee and punk have always gone hand in hand, and music undoubtedly inspired me to start my business, so it’s great to be a part of this project twinning the two.”

Dave Cullern, Sham City Roasters

Sham City Roasters is a specialist coffee roastery based in Hastings, UK, where they serve up delicious filter-coffee alongside vegan/vegetarian lunches, cakes and donuts. Sham City has a strong connection to the DIY punk scene, working with a number of bands and artists over the years, as well as collaborating with other punk-run small businesses.

(gig report) ATHEIST RAP(Novi Sad)/FAJRUNT(Varaždin)-19.04.2019.-PROSTOR ČAKOVEC

After couple of weeks, another great punkrock show happened in Klub Prostor Cezam in our hometown. None other than punkrock legends Atheist Rap from Novi Sad, Serbia visited us to celebrate their 30th birthday with a special set. They were supported by Fajrunt from Varaždin.

When I came to the yard in front of the club around eight in the evening, the situation didn´t look promising. The soundchecks were just over and there were only couple of people from the bands and the people involved with the jobs in and around the club and I was hoping that the people will come to the show although it is Friday and not Saturday night. Fortunately, people started to arrive and do all the punkrock folklore in front of the gig, like drinking, chatting happily and some of them were already happy and singing hahaha. The gig started right on time as scheduled at 22 hrs Fajrunt started their set in front of the empty club, but in two or three songs, Prostor filled with enough people to cheer and sing along with this excellent melodic punkrock trio from Varaždin.

Fajrunt played their set made of songs from both of their studio albums, and they sounded powerful and energetic delivering their version of melodic punkrock, sometimes fast, sometimes more emotive and slower coupled with great dual vocals provided by guitarist Mimi and the bass player Vujec. Besides their stuff, Fajrunt played a couple of covers by Mikrofonija and Kud Idijoti. I consider myself a great fan of this band and I really enjoy their gigs not matter how much times I saw them play live. The only thing their set lacked was the title song from the last album Predstava which is one of my favorites hehe, but that doesn´t matter, the show was great. Too bad many kids rather chose to stay in front and wait for the headliner.

Atheist Rap from Novi Sad, Serbia, started their set right on time about 11 in the evening providing almost two hours of happiness for all the fans who came there. Much respect to the band for keeping it alive and true for 30 years and being really nice and down to earth fellows who are always fun to see and listen to playing live. From the first song the madness in front of the stage started, with kids being all over the place, singing along with the band, dancing, pogoing, stagediving and the band really appreciated and gave their best back to the kids and everyone had smiles of joy on their faces. Last time I saw Atheist Rap was in 2017.here in our town headlining 3FF open air festival and since then they are back to having one guitar player with Radule delivering all the guitar work. This time their set included all the well known hits from the past, also some crowd favorites that were not played live for a long time, also couple of songs from their still actual last studio album, so none of the kids in the crowd can not say that they are dissatisfied with the setlist hehe. After the gig the party continued long in the night.

This was a warm up for 3FF 2019.edition and I am looking forward to this year´s festival edition, so stay tuned on this page for more news regarding that in the coming weeks!
