(review) Niki Lauda Firefighters – ‘S/T’

Niki Lauda Firefighters are from Berlin, Germany and they are no strangers to the pages of this webzine because we reviewed their demo a while ago. Now, it is time for their debut full length album. This beauty is an energy bomb containing 17 songs. Sounds long with too many songs? No, not at all! Because the music of Niki Lauda Firefighters is a fast mixture of skate hardcore punk, some crust and d beat here and there, also melody and straightforward punk influenced guitar work. Vocals are just right, screaming at the top of the lungs when necessary, also being a bit more melodic yet harsh at times when song atmosphere needs such voice. Lyrics are mixture of personal and humor, black irony and cinic aggression at times, greatly written. I would very much enjoy this band live, because judging by studio efforts, they deliver tons of energy and hardcore food for the hardcore hearts while playing live. Some of the songs are very anthemic, like one of my personal favorites ‘Landlords’ and also ‘Artificial Stupidity’, some other favorite being ‘ Too Much Information’ and ‘One Pint, One Piss’. This is a great band with strong and fast debut album so check this one out immediately.

(review) Burn Unit – ‘Demo 2023’

I must admit that I have never heard of Burn Unit prior to this demo. These guys are hailing from Fresno, California and this is their three song demo, short but sweet. Lyrics deal with gap between the expectations of others and real you, losing friends, betrayal, losing and gaining hope, so they are personal but done in a hardcore way, the way I love it for three decades now. Music is pretty brutal, mixture of hardcore with street punk roots and modern beatdown influenced hardcore. Song ‘False Self’ reminded me of European hardcore bands like Ryker’s, Right Direction and Backfire!, meaning all those nineties hardcore bands that I still love and much respect. Vocals are deep brutal but you can understand most of what is being sung about so that is another plus for this band. Besides punk roots, couple of metallic guitar work influences are more than obvious, especially in a song ‘Burn’, which reminded me of 25TaLife in some way, maybe it is just me, not vocally, only musically, having metallic verses, slower and thundering, and street punk chorus made for stage diving and singing along to. If you are into street wise hardcore, Burn Unit is the one to check out!

(movie) ChristCore(2012) – the other side of hardcore punk

Is spirituality important in hardcore music? Back in the nineties we had Krishna hardcore bands, but besides that one more scene reared its head and it is Christian hardcore scene with lots of bands and people that worship and love this kind of hardcore. I must admit that I didn’t know much about that scene until watching this movie. This one follows three bands called Messengers, Sleeping Giant, and For Today on their road, following their gigs, worship, healing prayers etc…We also find out more about one of the greatest Christian hardcore labels called Facedown Records and I must admit that I was a sceptic when this scene is concerned. But, the music is great, lyrics are set to debate whether you believe or not. Me personally are not believer and not Christian, so they don’t work for me, but this movie is an important documentary about one big scene and features good music by good bands. Go watch this one!
