(review) DONOTS – ‘Heut ist ein guter Tag’

German punk rockers DONOTS released new full length album and it contains fifteen songs. There was a term in the nineties, I think it is still in use called Deutschpunk being all those German pop punk/melodic punk bands with specific style and German lyrics. DONOTS are veterans of the scene and this album brings melodic punk rock with songs in German lyrics and mainly mid tempo emotional punk rock with beautiful vocals and I always say, German language is such great language for punk being it angry hardcore punk or more melodic punk rock. There is occasional excursion into more faster hardcore skate punk waters like with ‘1.21. Gigawatt’ or reggae with one of my favorites ‘Hunde los’. There are also pop punk influences like in ‘Traurige Roboter’ and more street punk sing along choruses like ‘Apokalypse Stehplatz Innenraum’ and back to hardcore punk with ‘Es tut nur weh, wenn ich lache’. I saw this band one year playing Punk Rock Holiday and their show was a blast, so I would love to check them out in some club show, I believe that would be awesome. In the meantime, check out this album. Good one.

(review) Smugly Ugly – ‘Alumni Weekend’

Now, this band was refreshing to listen to. Smugly Ugly are from New Jersey area and this is their debut album. This one contains eight songs of interesting music. It all sometimes sounds like noise punk with Sonic Youth influences for example in ‘Smugly Ugly’. Also there are brass instruments like trumpet, trombone, saxophone and also keyboards delivering melodic favorites and hits like my favorite ‘One Last Chance’. But, that is not all, ‘Feeling Gr8’ delivers pop punk like it was played in early 2000s with all those bands like Blink 182 and similar came out with their best music. This is a short album but so varied and interesting to listen to that you just got to spin it one more time or two times in order two catch all what you missed.

Calgary’s The Moröns have released a music video for their cover of ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ (originally recorded by Whitney Houston but made popular by The Moröns). The track appears on 2022’s ‘Book of Morön’ that was released via High End Denim Records.

The video was made for millions of dollars in Hollywood but some friends in the scene helped out too!

The Moröns will also be opening for the Mad Caddies at Dickens Pub in Calgary on February 23 so Alberta folks should come and sing along!
