(review) Apocalypse – Last Man Standing (High Roller Records)

Time for some old school heavy metal to grace the pages of this zine. Apocalypse are hailing from England and they released their first demo in 1981, but this is their first studio full length album after two compilations, three singles and one split under that name. There are nine songs on this opus, delivering old school heavy metal with lots of NWOBHM influences, delivering melodic choruses, nice vocal lines at verses and great guitar work. This is kind of sad themed album with guitarist/vocalist Steve Grainger being only original member left alive. Vocals are at times harsher but melodic, there are no high tones, but good mid voice singing. I can imagine this album being played over the speakers at some metal party happily drinking and cheering over this music and being proud that you are metal and free. This album is a time machine which brought me to some happier times, making me a bit melancholic deep inside of me. I also sense street metal vibes while listening to this opus. The songs are a bit long on this one, but they do not get boring with this high level musicianship. My personal favorites on this one: You Called The Fight, Urban Decay and the epic title song. If you love your metal old school with great musicianship, check this one out!
